What Clubs Are and What They Can Be
Clubs consist of a group of people who, before becoming members, have applied for admission. Clubs can be dedicated to various activities: sports clubs, motorcycle clubs, etc.
Their unification is based on:
⦁ common interest
⦁ joint activity
⦁ achieving a common goal
Since When Clubs Have Existed and What Organizational Form They Follow
There is historical evidence of the existence of clubs dating back to Ancient Rome. Ancient Greek clubs had organizational forms – laws, assemblies, officials, oaths upon entry, and reports after their management. There were also conditions for admission to the club: entrance fee and candidate screening. Club members voted on how the club’s revenue should be used (from building/maintaining the clubhouse to everything related to their club activities). We can see that the club organization in antiquity closely resembles that of modern motorcycle clubs.
MC (Motorcycle Club)
These clubs are characterized by strict organization, hierarchy, and etiquette, mandatory for all members. Personal dedication and self-discipline among members are of great importance.
Sacred symbols for motorcycle clubs are:
- the headquarters called the “clubhouse”
- the leather vest, with the club emblem and patches
- with particular respect, members address each other as “brother …….”
There are some prohibitions that all members of motorcycle clubs must follow:
– It is forbidden for non-members of the club to visit the clubhouse without an invitation.
– The vest, particularly “the back patch,” is the property and primary symbol of dignity for its owner. Therefore, it is forbidden for another person to touch or wear it.
– It is forbidden to sit on another person’s motorcycle without permission. The same applies to the rider’s “lady.”
– Police officers, former police officers, women, and homosexuals are not allowed to be members of motorcycle clubs.
Motorcycle Brotherhood
Among themselves, members of motorcycle clubs form a motorcycle brotherhood.
Literature defines various definitions and understandings of brotherhood in motorcycle culture. Here are some of them:
⦁ brothers who rely on each other for daily survival
⦁ brothers who will help each other in cases of imprisonment
Here is how members of motorcycle clubs define brotherhood:
⦁ Shared Passion
“It doesn’t matter what kind of motorcycle someone rides. The very idea that they ride and participate in motorcycling, engaging in the same activity, brings us closer and makes us call each other brothers. Sharing the same passion in which we participate makes us brothers.”
⦁ Safety
The unification of people as brothers, apart from their passion for motorcycles, is also due to their need for safety. “Brotherhood provides a sense of safety and security in tough times.”
⦁ Friendship
“Brotherhood is not limited to riding but also includes other activities typical of friendship – partying together, playing cards, etc. The motorcycle itself is an element of friendship.”
⦁ Addition to the Family
“Brotherhood is like an addition to the family you have. They are part of your life, they are your friends, people you go out with, your memories are with them, you feel connected to them.”
⦁ Support
“Club members become like your family. They are present during important life events. They support you morally. You are connected through the act of motorcycling, but the bond between you is much more than that.”
⦁ Sharing
“Sharing the same interest/passion, you go to certain places together, see the same things, and experience shared emotions.”
⦁ Trust
In “brotherhood,” people may not be related by blood, but they trust each other and treat each other like family.
⦁ Belonging
“To show loyalty and belonging to a specific club, members wear club emblems and patches.”
